Most\nlaid off thousands of employees and closed down their ancillary operations for\nhotel rooms, restaurants, and convention business.&nbsp; Recently there had been consolidation of the\nmajor operators as they sought scale in a competitive, capital intensive and\nlow margin business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sports betting was given the\ngreen flag when the Supreme Court repealed the Professional and Amateur Sports\nProtection Act in 2018. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Individual states have rapidly\npassed legislation that allowed sports betting. Licenses were granted to online\noperators such as DraftKings and Fan Duel, along with established casino\ncompanies including Caesar\u2019s and Penn National. By working with established\nentities, they could ensure that games and events were offered in a safe and\nresponsible manner, along with monitoring the social problems associated with\ngambling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently legal in over 20\nstates and expected to reach 40 states by 2022.&nbsp;\nThey are looking generate tax revenue and capture black market activity\ndominated by bookies.&nbsp; States requires\noperators to pay steep licensing fees and tax rates.&nbsp; Illinois were offered at $20 million while\nNew Jersey sold for $100,000. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When evaluating the data behind\nsports betting, there a several key metrics: Handle \u2013 the amount wagered; Revenue\nand Hold \u2013 amount and percent kept by the sports book; and Tax Revenue for the\nstate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The largest sports book by\nhandle is still led by Nevada, followed by New Jersey and Pennsylvania.&nbsp; The rapid growth of New Jersey is primarily\ndue to its proximately to dense populations and expected reach $1 billion in\nmonthly handle and becoming the nation\u2019s leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On a percentage basis, sports\nbooks in Delaware retain the highest hold, then Michigan and Mississippi.&nbsp; Home to Dover Downs, all betting has to be\ndone on-site since they do not yet allow online or mobile betting.&nbsp; Most operators retain between 6% to 8%,\nhigher amounts may drive bettors to more favorable jurisdictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>State tax revenues have been\nrising.&nbsp; During challenging economic\ntimes, they need all the money they can get to fill budget gaps. Tax rates for\nsports betting typically range between 8% and 10%.&nbsp; There are a few states that charge up to 25%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nascar and the American Gaming\nAssociation have established a program \u2013 \u201cHave a Game Plan \u2013 Bet Responsibly\u201d.&nbsp; The goal is to enlighten fans on responsible\nsports betting. One theme will be \u201cKnow When to Pit.\u201d Nascar is their first\nLeague Partner and underscores their commitment to allowing fans to engage with\ntheir favorite drivers and race team.&nbsp;\nThis supports their existing relationships with Sportsradar as their\nintegrity partner, BetGenius as its data provider, and Penn National and BetMGM\nas gaming operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nascar\u2019s comprehensive approach\nto gaming will lay the foundation for other series to follow.&nbsp; It also allows for the sponsorship and\nactivation opportunities unique to motorsports.&nbsp;\nFacility operators may also consider redevelopment as Atlanta Motor\nSpeedway unveiled $1 billion resort project with Foxwoods Casino&nbsp; that would include a casino and hotel along\nwith a water park and concert venue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lack of live sports games and\nraces during the early part of the shutdown sent bettors to foreign markets\nlooking for opportunities.&nbsp;&nbsp; At the same\ntime, operators moved their marketing budgets online.&nbsp; Led by Nascar, soon sports got bet on track\nand wagering resumed to totals never seen before.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The sports betting industry in the United States is growing with relative speed.&nbsp; This month we will look at how wagering has been impacted by the shutdown.
