{"id":679,"date":"2019-07-04T18:26:10","date_gmt":"2019-07-04T18:26:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businessofspeed.com\/?p=679"},"modified":"2019-07-04T18:26:11","modified_gmt":"2019-07-04T18:26:11","slug":"ss-bos-column-july-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/businessofspeed.speedwaysonline.com\/?p=679","title":{"rendered":"SS &#8211; BOS &#8211; Column &#8211; July 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This month, we examine costs and trends to attend major sporting events. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the main\nconsiderations of sports fans is the cost to attend a sporting event.&nbsp; During this time of increased viewing options\nand the competition for a person\u2019s time, money is the one constant metric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The game must be\nworthy of a consumers dollars and attention.&nbsp;\nThe amenities should provide the quality of experience fans expect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many\nstrategies being utilized to interact with consumers.&nbsp; Adjusting ticket prices according to supply,\ndemand and other factors is becoming more popular as a tool to fill the venues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dynamic\nticketing modifies pricing in real time to account for the local market,\nschedule, weather conditions and other causes. The result is prices reflecting\nfair market value.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Affordability is\nthe underlying premise for all venue operators.&nbsp;\nHow can a family have enough money to bring everyone to the event and\nenjoy themselves.&nbsp; Lower ticket prices\ncan encourage buying and create loyalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sports tickets\nare typically purchased in several ways: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Season tickets are offered for sale at the beginning of the year.&nbsp; They require the highest level of commitment (financial and time) from the fan and receives the highest discount; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Individual tickets are sold at face value but can result in pricing inefficiency with high demand sell-outs and low demand &#8220;lackluster games.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tickets can be purchased when resold to another owner.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The underlying\npremise of ticket sales is revenue.&nbsp; Each\nfan has a customer lifetime value.&nbsp; The\nmore races a spectator attends, the more involved they become.&nbsp; The most avid fans spend more money on\ntickets, merchandise, concessions, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Team Marketing\nReport publishes its annual Fan Cost Index.&nbsp;\nThis metric comprises the prices of four adult average-price tickets; parking\nfor one car, and the least available price for \u2013 two draft beers, four soft\ndrinks, four hot dogs and two adult size caps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These calculations are used to compare prices across the top professional sports leagues in the United States.&nbsp; Sports professionals uses this data to assess their outlook for their own teams and venues, while comparing their results to those of their peers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following\npresents totals from respective leagues:&nbsp;\nNational Football League &#8211; $536.04; National Hockey League &#8211; $459.85; National\nBasketball Association &#8211; $420.58; Major League Soccer &#8211; $250.40; and Major\nLeague Baseball &#8211; $234.38.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The highest\npriced leagues are viewed as \u201cmedia first\u201d properties for sponsors, while lower\nones are \u201clive event first\u201d sports with digital and social extensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Nascar is\nnot covered by this analysis, it probably falls at the lower levels.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall admissions and concessions revenue for publicly traded motorspots track operator companies has decreased by almost half in the last 10 years.&nbsp; They have reduced grandstand seating capacity by a quarter.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The television media deal that expires in 2024 is stabilizing revenue and sustaining profits.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Track operators strive to provide value for their fans.&nbsp; On average ticket prices have been dropping over the last few years.&nbsp; They have discounted options for military, family and children free policies.&nbsp; Parking is free at most venues.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hotels no longer require minimum stay requirements and deal prices can be had.&nbsp; Coolers are allowed which provide food options and lessens wait times at concessions stands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Technology is leading the way to meet the changing consumption habits at the track.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Providing Wi-Fi access which allows live-streaming from mobile devices to social media updates on multiple platforms, is here to stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emphasis is\nplaced on the fan that attends a live event.&nbsp;\nIf the experience is awesome, the amenities are outstanding, research\npoints that have a chance to make them a fan for life.&nbsp; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This month, we examine costs and trends to attend major sporting events.
